The Flower in Castner Glacier Ice Cave, Winter 2022

We all know that global warming is one of the biggest environmental problems in the world. As temperatures have risen sharply in the past two years, more and more emergencies have occurred. Last summer, Alaska's Castner Glacier Ice Cave collapsed in half as a glacier melted due to extreme weather caused by rising temperatures. In the last year of Sichuan, China, demand exceeded the capacity of hydropower plants, causing water plants to run dry and people to lose power in the heat. There was even a wildfire in Montreal, Canada, that burned for three days this year because the weather was so high that the fire could not be put out. And it not only affects the local area but also the neighbourhood cities such as New York and Toronto. It can be seen that the series of problems caused by global warming will bring us many irreversible consequences.

Rise In Temperature

Project Medium: Digital Photographs, with Canon EOS 77D

2023.01

This work is made up of three sets of photographs. The first group is ice cream and ice cubes, representing the melting process of glaciers. The second group shows the wilting and fragility of flowers from fresh ones due to lack of water and high temperature. The third group was a scented candle that burned from a single cluster of flames to a large fire. These objects are usually wonderful for people, but they are divided and frightened by the heat. The process of the decay of something positive and beautiful for people can also be seen as a metaphor for the human destruction of nature.

Before this year, I didn't have an intuitive idea of global warming. I even felt that these crises were far away from me. It was just a little hotter in summer and a little warmer in winter. However, it wasn't until I saw the half-collapsed Castner Glacier Ice Cave in Fairbanks this winter that I suddenly felt sad and regretful. It is pathetic that the natural landscapes and legacies have been affected or even disappeared as a result of human mistakes. Therefore, I want to use my work to represent the situation of global warming, trying to warn people about the impact of these environmental disasters and make them introspect about their own behaviours.
